01 — Foundations
The making of St. Ignatius before he was a monk: the gentry childhood and the brilliant, renounced engineering career; and the four-year search across the monasteries of the Russian North for a living elder who could teach him the inner life.
This section covers the years 1807–1831, from birth to the eve of tonsure: the formation of the nobleman Dmitry Brianchaninov, and the wandering apprenticeship under Elder Leonid (the future Lev of Optina) and others that shaped his lifelong conviction that the age had lost its Spirit-bearing guides.
