08 — Glorification and Veneration

The formal recognition of St. Iakovos Tsalikis by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 2017 and the establishment of his feast on 22 November; and his standing as a contemporary elder of Evia and of the wider Greek Orthodox world. These two files treat the act of glorification and the character of the veneration that surrounds him today.

Tradition: Greek Orthodox (20th-c. elder; glorified 2017)

Twenty-six years after his death, the immediate and enduring cult of Iakovos was ratified by the Church: the Ecumenical Patriarchate numbered him among the saints in 2017, and his glorification was solemnly celebrated at his own monastery. This section treats that act and its liturgical celebration, and then situates Iakovos within the living veneration of contemporary Orthodoxy — a saint of Evia, of the refugees, and of the modern Greek renewal of the eldership.
