03 — De Trinitate

Hilary’s masterpiece, the twelve books On the Trinity — begun in exile and the work that earned him the title “the Athanasius of the West.” This section examines its structure and composition, its sustained defense of the full divinity and co-eternity of the Son against the Arians, and the scriptural method by which Hilary disarmed the “subordinationist-sounding” texts — above all “the Father is greater than I.”

Tradition: Pan-Orthodox (pre-Schism West; Church Father)

De Trinitate is the first great Latin treatise on the Trinity and the foundation on which Ambrose and Augustine would build. This section gives it two files. The first treats the work as a whole: its title and composition (and the scholarly debate over whether Books 1–3 first circulated separately as a De Fide), its twelve-book architecture from the conversion preface through the refutation of Arian exegesis to the climactic defense of the Son’s eternal Godhead, and the title “the Athanasius of the West.” The second focuses on Hilary’s exegetical method against Arianism — the forma Dei / forma servi distinction by which he read the texts the Arians loved (John 14:28; Proverbs 8:22; Mark 13:32; Philippians 2), referring their subordinationist surface to the economy of the Incarnation rather than to the Son’s eternal nature.
