09 — Veneration and Legacy

The conclusion of the guide: the developed liturgical cult of Hilarion — his feast of 21 October and his place in the Orthodox and Western calendars — and a sober final assessment of his legacy as the father of Palestinian monasticism and of the saint who can be discerned behind Jerome’s Life. These files gather the threads of the collection into a closing estimate of who Hilarion was, what he did, and how he is remembered.

Tradition: Pan-Orthodox (Desert Father; father of Palestinian monasticism)

Hilarion’s legacy rests on two foundations: the historical one — his founding of the monastic life in Palestine, securely attested and lastingly consequential — and the literary one — Jerome’s Life, which carried his memory through the whole Church and made him a famous saint. This final section treats the feast and the liturgical cult that keep his memory, and then weighs his legacy and offers an honest assessment of the saint behind the Life, drawing together the source-criticism of Section 05 and the historical core it established into a closing judgment.

File Description
Feast and Cult The feast of 21 October in the Orthodox and Western calendars; the liturgical commemoration of Hilarion as a venerable father and wonderworker; his place in the synaxaria and the menaion; the shape of the developed cult that grew from the early veneration of Sections 07–08.
Legacy and Assessment A sober final assessment: Hilarion’s durable legacy as the father of Palestinian monasticism; the saint discernible behind Jerome’s Life; what the collection’s source-criticism leaves standing; the title “the Great” and the meaning of a holiness known almost wholly through a single, deliberately crafted source.
