Spiritual Counsels
The recorded words of St. Herman and the teaching they imply. Because Herman left almost no writings, this section works with a deliberately small corpus — a handful of sayings preserved chiefly through Yanovsky’s letters and the 1867 Valaam Life — and is candid about how thin that corpus is. The first file gathers the attested sayings and traces each to its source document; the second draws out, as synthesis rather than system, the teaching on the love of God that runs through them.
Tradition: Pan-Orthodox (glorified by the OCA and ROCOR, 1970)
The two files divide the labor between the words and their meaning. Recorded Sayings presents the genuine corpus source by source — the shipboard conversation and the “from this day, from this hour” vow, the confession of forty years’ striving, the words on faith and love toward Christ, and the answer about solitude — each pinned to the Life and the Yanovsky chain, with no later sayings invented to fill out the portrait. Teaching on the Love of God then builds on exactly that material: the primacy of the love of God, self-reproach without despair, and mercy toward the weak, with the Valaam and Sarov spirituality of the Paisian revival showing through. Both files defer to What Is Attested for the grading of the sources.
