Section 08: Theological Implications
What Palamism secures, and what it does not. This section steps back from the texts and the controversy to set out the doctrinal payoff of St. Gregory Palamas’s theology — real union with the unknowable God, grace as uncreated, the integrity of the Trinity-energies relation — and to handle, with care, the much-mythologized question of his relation to Western scholasticism.
Tradition: Pan-Orthodox (Church Father)
Contents
| File | Topic |
|---|---|
| Apophaticism and Grace | The apophatic-participatory balance (Lossky’s framing); grace as uncreated set fairly beside the Western created-grace framework (each system’s inner logic); the Trinity-energies relation and the answer to the “fourth thing in God” objection |
| Critique of Scholasticism | What Palamas actually engaged (Barlaam’s epistemology, not Aquinas); the real Byzantine Thomists (the Kydones brothers); the modern construction of the opposition (Lossky/Romanides) and its revisionists (Demacopoulos–Papanikolaou, Plested, Russell); the genuine differences that remain |
How to Use
- Read Apophaticism and Grace for the constructive theology: what the essence-energies distinction positively secures, and how it relates to the Western account of grace.
- Read Critique of Scholasticism for the historiographical correction: why “Palamas versus Aquinas” is largely a twentieth-century construct, and what real differences survive once the polemic is removed.
A Note on Method
Both files follow the methodology’s guidance for disputed and polemically charged topics (METHODOLOGY §4): positions are named with their proponents and attributed (Lossky, Romanides, Plested, Demacopoulos and Papanikolaou, Russell) rather than asserted as a single verdict, and the Western framework is presented on its own inner logic rather than as a caricature.
