Section 07: Other Works

Beyond the Triads, the corpus of St. Gregory Palamas is large and varied: a systematic book of “chapters,” sixty-three pastoral homilies, letters to his opponents and to Athos, anti-Latin treatises on the procession of the Spirit, polemical Antirrhetics, and theological dialogues. This section maps that wider corpus and its modern critical editions, complementing the homiletic material treated in section 06.

Tradition: Pan-Orthodox (Church Father)

File Topic
The One Hundred and Fifty Chapters The Capita 150 (c. 1344–1350): the kephalaia genre; cosmology and natural philosophy (chs. 1–14); anthropology against the philosophers; the nous–logos–pneuma Trinitarian analogy; the uncreated-energies chapters (64–150); the anti-Akindynist polemic — Palamas’s systematic summa in Sinkewicz’s edition
Homilies and Letters The rest of the corpus: theological homilies (Transfiguration 34–35, the Cross, the Marian/Dormition homily 37); letters to Barlaam, Akindynos, and the Athonites; the Apodictic Treatises on the Spirit’s procession; the Antirrhetics; the Theophanes dialogue; the Christou edition volume map

How to Use

  • Read The One Hundred and Fifty Chapters first: it gathers the whole of Palamas’s thought — cosmos, soul, Trinity, energies — into a single ordered book, and so serves as a map of everything else.
  • Read Homilies and Letters to see the same theology in its pastoral (the homilies) and controversial (the letters, Apodictic Treatises, Antirrhetics, dialogues) registers, and to locate each work in the modern critical editions.

Editions Cited

  • Sinkewicz (PIMS, 1988) is the critical edition and English translation of the Capita 150 and the standard reference for it.
  • Christou’s Syngrammata (Thessaloniki, 1962–1992) is the critical Greek edition of the collected works; it supersedes Migne, PG 150–151, the older reference scheme. Per this collection’s methodology (§2.1), patristic works are cited by title and internal division first, then the scholarly edition consulted.
