06 — Gregory as Witness
The source-critical hinge of the collection. Much of what is known of sixth-century Gaul — and the earliest firm attestation of more than one saint venerated in this repository — rests on Gregory’s word alone. This section asks what depends on him (Clovis, Genevieve, Radegund), and weighs his value and his limits as a source.
Tradition: Western (pre-Schism Gaul; father of Western hagiography)
Because this repository leans on Gregory as a witness — for the shrine of St. Martin, and as the one early independent attestation of St. Genevieve — the collection must state plainly what that reliance involves. A source of Gregory’s kind is at once indispensable and partial: an eyewitness to much of his own century, but an interested one, a bishop writing to magnify the saints and to shape the memory of kings. This section applies METHODOLOGY §3.5 at full strength, separating what Gregory establishes from what he merely reports, and pinning claims to him by name and book.

| what-rests-on-gregory.md | The great things known chiefly or only through Gregory: Clovis and the disputed date of his baptism (496 vs 508), the attestation of St. Genevieve, and Radegund’s death and funeral of 587, at which Gregory presided. |
| value-and-limits.md | Gregory’s strengths (proximity, first-person testimony, documentary detail) and his limits (partiality, the shaping hand, the miracle-frame); how to read a witness who is also an advocate. |
