Section 07: Clairvoyance and Wonders

The section of the St. Gabriel reference guide that handles the wonder-tradition — the accounts of spiritual insight, foreknowledge, and miracle that gather around the elder of Samtavro, and his own warnings against seeking them. Its governing discipline is the one the whole collection turns on at its most sensitive point: no wonder is asserted as fact; each is pinned to the named witness who reports it, first-hand witnesses distinguished from second-hand chains and from self-reported lay testimony, per METHODOLOGY §3.5.

Tradition: Georgian Orthodox (canonized 2012)

File Topic
Accounts of Insight The attested wonders, each pinned to its witness: the first-hand memoir of Nun Parasceva (Rostiashvili) (angels, the shining face, the Shavnabada bilocation, the reading of hearts, the foretold death); the St. Anthony of Martqopi drive, first-hand from the driver Otar Nikolaishvili; the prophecies and folly of Metropolitan Seraphim and Abbess Ketevan; the incorrupt-blood claim of Dr. Zurab Varazi, second-hand through Archpriest David and Khrustalyeva; and the posthumous healings, named recipients and notebook self-reports alike, graded by attribution strength
Sober Discernment His hiding of his gifts under feigned folly and refusal to be known as a wonderworker; the theology of discernment (diakrisis) and the danger of spiritual delusion (prelest / plani); the patristic and Optina/Brianchaninov cautions against seeking signs; the disputed apocalyptic “sky / cosmos” sayings; and the reporting-not-certifying discipline

How to Use

  • Read Accounts of Insight for what the sources attest — and read it with its attributions, not around them. The whole value of the file is that it tells you who says each thing and how close that witness stood to the event.
  • Read Sober Discernment for the corrective the saint himself supplies: the man to whom these wonders are ascribed spent his life hiding them, and the Church that venerates him warns sharply against chasing them. The two files are designed to be read together — the wonder-tradition and its own internal brake.
