Section 06: Against Heresies
Ephrem’s verse war for orthodoxy. The two files cover, first, his campaign against the heresies of the Syriac world — the Hymns against Heresies aimed at Marcion, Bardaisan, and Mani, and the distinctive strategy of meeting the heretics on their own ground by fashioning orthodox teaching-hymns as a deliberate answer in kind to Bardaisan’s own popular hymns; and, second, the positive face of that polemic — what Ephrem was defending: the full divinity of the Son against the Arians, the goodness of the one Creator against the dualists, the reality of the Incarnation, and the unity of the two Testaments, all confessed in the form that was Ephrem’s own, the sung hymn.
Tradition: Pan-Orthodox (Church Father) / Syriac
Contents
| File | Topic |
|---|---|
| Bardaisan, Marcion, Mani | The Hymns against Heresies (Contra Haereses, 56 hymns); Bardaisan’s popular hymns; hymnody deployed as counter-propaganda — fighting melody with melody; the women’s choirs enlisted in the campaign |
| Orthodoxy in Verse | The positive confession behind the polemic: the full divinity of the Son (anti-Arian); the one good Creator and the unity of the Testaments (anti-dualist); the reality of the Incarnation; orthodoxy confessed in song |
How to Use
- Read Bardaisan, Marcion, Mani for Ephrem’s polemical strategy and the great cycle of anti-heretical hymns.
- Read Orthodoxy in Verse for what the polemic served — the constructive statement of the Nicene and Syriac faith, sung rather than defined.
- The prose counterpart of the campaign is in Section 04; the symbolic theology the orthodoxy rests on is in Section 05.
