05 — The Teaching
St. Ephraim’s teaching, reducible to two words held inseparably together — obedience and prayer — and grounded not in books but in lived experience. An unlettered man who distrusted speculation, he taught only what he had proved: “experience has convinced me.”
Tradition: Greek Orthodox / Athonite
This section sets out St. Ephraim’s counsel. The first file treats the twin heads of his teaching, obedience and noetic prayer, and their ordered relation; the second examines the experiential character of his authority — theology as the knowledge of God given in practice, not speculation — and its place in the Orthodox tradition.
