03 — Joseph the Hesychast
St. Ephraim’s discipleship in prayer under St. Joseph the Hesychast, the great teacher of noetic prayer he met in the neighboring desert around 1934 — and the decisive fact that he received Joseph’s prayer without ever leaving the obedience of his own harsh elder, Nikephoros, at Joseph’s own insistence.
Tradition: Greek Orthodox / Athonite
This section covers the relationship that shaped St. Ephraim’s inner life. The first file treats the meeting with Joseph and the noetic prayer he received and later transmitted; the second examines the pivotal decision — the interpretive key to his whole life — to remain under Nikephoros while learning prayer from Joseph.
