07 — Dimitri and the Petrine Church

St. Dimitri among the learned Kyivan hierarchs whom Peter the Great drew into his reforming, Westernizing church — and the great historiographical question that gathers around them: the “Latinized” theology of the Kyiv-Mohyla academy, Georges Florovsky’s famous critique of it as a “pseudomorphosis” of Orthodoxy, and the serious modern pushback in defense of the Kyivan baroque.

This section places Dimitri in his ecclesiastical-historical moment and weighs the contested question of the Kyivan learning, both sides set out per the repository methodology (§4). The first file is the flagship on the “Latin” question and Florovsky; the second treats Dimitri’s own situation as a man of faith under the Petrine reforms.
