09 — Veneration and Legacy

The living veneration and the final reckoning: the feast of 26 October and the festal cult of Thessaloniki, with its hymnography, its civic celebrations (the Demetria), and its patronage of the city; and a sober assessment of the whole — the immense place Demetrios holds in Balkan Orthodoxy weighed honestly against the slenderness of his history, with the source-critical conclusions of the guide drawn together.

Tradition: Pan-Orthodox (Great Martyr; the Myrrh-Streamer)

This closing section turns to the saint as he is venerated and as he should be assessed. It presents the feast of 26 October and the festal traditions of Thessaloniki, of which Demetrios remains the patron, and then offers a measured assessment — the kind the whole collection has worked toward — of a saint whose cult is among the greatest of Orthodoxy and whose history is among the most contested, holding both truths together without diminishing either.
