08 — Iconography and the Military Saints
Demetrios in image: the iconographic type of the warrior-saint — the young, beardless soldier in armour and red cloak, spear or sword in hand, often shown seated or with the walled city beneath him; and his place among the military martyrs, above all his constant pairing with St. George, the twin great soldier-saints of Byzantine and Slavic art and devotion. These files read the visual cult and set Demetrios beside his counterpart.
Tradition: Pan-Orthodox (Great Martyr; the Myrrh-Streamer)
The military-martyr was one of Byzantium’s most powerful visual creations, and Demetrios stands at its center. This section examines his iconography — the red-cloaked spearman, the votive mosaics of the basilica, the city on the icon, the later equestrian image — and his relation to St. George, with whom he forms the paired ideal of the warrior-saint across the Orthodox world. The treatment follows the iconographic scholarship of Christopher Walter and others, and connects to the Orthodox theology of the icon.
