01 — Foundations
The historical and civic ground on which the cult of St. Demetrios stands: Thessaloniki c. 300 — the great Macedonian metropolis that Galerius made his imperial capital and the stage of his persecution — and the securable historical minimum about the martyr himself, including the unsettling question of whether the original martyr belonged not to Thessaloniki at all but to Sirmium. These files establish what can be said about the city and the man, and how securely.
Tradition: Pan-Orthodox (Great Martyr; the Myrrh-Streamer)
St. Demetrios is among the most venerated of all Orthodox saints, yet the historical core beneath his immense cult is documentarily slight, and even his attachment to Thessaloniki is disputed by serious scholarship. This section sets the context — the Tetrarchic city of Galerius and the persecution of c. 303–311 — and then takes the honest measure of the evidence: what the earliest sources do and do not say, when they were written, and why the question of the cult’s origin (Thessaloniki or Sirmium?) hangs over everything that follows.

|---|---|
| Thessaloniki and the Tetrarchy | Thessaloniki c. 300; its making into the imperial residence of the Caesar (later Augustus) Galerius; the Galerian building programme; the Great Persecution of 303–311 and Galerius’s role in it; the civic stage on which the martyr-tradition is set. |
| The Historical Core | The securable minimum about Demetrios himself; the lateness of the Passio; the absence of any early Thessalonian martyr-record; the question of the Sirmium origin (both sides, named scholars) and how it bears on what can be claimed. |
