Section 02: The Catechetical Lectures
The flagship source-section of the compendium. Cyril’s Procatechesis and eighteen Catechetical Lectures — delivered to the photizomenoi (the baptismal candidates of the Lenten “enlightenment”) around 350, mostly in the Martyrium basilica on Golgotha — are the single most important early witness to the rites and process of Christian initiation. This section walks the corpus itself and then reconstructs the catechumenal process it reveals: the scrutinies, the daily exorcisms, the handing-over of the creed, and the disciplina arcani that governs the whole.
Tradition: Pan-Orthodox (Church Father)
Contents
| File | Topic |
|---|---|
| The Procatechesis and the Eighteen | The flagship walk through the corpus: the audience (photizomenoi), the Lenten setting, the Martyrium venue (c. 350), the structure (Procatechesis + eighteen Lectures, with Lectures 6–18 forming a clause-by-clause commentary on the Jerusalem baptismal creed), the stenographic transmission, the disciplina arcani as a structuring principle, and the dating crux (presbyter c. 348 vs bishop c. 350–351) |
| The Catechumenate | The catechetical process the Lectures reveal: enrolment of names, the distinction of catechumens from the photizomenoi of the final Lenten stage, the scrutinies and daily exorcisms, fasting and moral preparation, the traditio and redditio symboli, and the disciplina arcani (the discipline of the secret) that withheld the deepest mysteries until after baptism |
How to Use
- Read The Procatechesis and the Eighteen first: it is the keystone of the whole compendium, the source on which most of the later sections draw, and it lays out the shape of the corpus that the rest of the collection unpacks.
- Then read The Catechumenate for the lived process behind the text — what it meant to be enrolled, exorcised, scrutinized, and prepared for the font.
- The two files are complementary: the first describes the documents, the second the process. Neither duplicates the rite-by-rite detail of Section 04 or the post-baptismal mystagogy of Section 03.
