07 — Martyrdom
The death of Kosmas, pinned to the sources: the hostility that gathered against him (partly from Jewish merchants and Muslim officials, per the sources), and the arrest and execution by hanging on 24 August 1779 near Berat / Kolikontasi in present-day Albania at Kurt Pasha’s order — and the meaning the Church gave that death: martyr first, “ethnomartyr” second.
Tradition: Greek Orthodox (canonized 1961)
