03 — The Schools
The work for which Kosmas is most remembered: the founding of hundreds of schools — both elementary “common” and more advanced “Greek” schools — so that the children of the enslaved Greek Christians could read the Gospel in their own tongue. The school numbers are given as a disputed range; the program is understood as the safeguard of faith first and the seedbed of the national revival second.
Tradition: Greek Orthodox (canonized 1961)
