04 — Bishop and Abbot

The two great offices of the tradition, treated where they are most contested and most characteristic: the doubtful episcopate of Besançon, which the critical fasti hedge or omit, and the resignation-and-return to Condat, the monastic ideal of the cloister chosen over the see.
