02 — The Historical Brendan
The sober historical record of St. Brendan of Clonfert (c. 484 – c. 577): what the Irish annals can bear about his floruit, his foundations, and his obit; the genuine coastal voyages to Scotland, Wales, and Brittany that belong to the world of Irish monastic peregrinatio rather than to the Atlantic legend; and Brendan’s place among the “Twelve Apostles of Ireland,” with his attested relations with Columba, Enda of Aran, and the founders of his generation. This is the abbot drawn from the documentary floor, kept rigorously apart from the navigator of the Navigatio.
Tradition: Pan-Orthodox (pre-Schism; Celtic)
Before the Navigatio made Brendan a figure of European legend, he was an Irish abbot whose existence, foundations, and death are recorded in the annals and the early genealogical and Vita traditions. This section assembles that record. It separates the firm anchors — the annalistic obit, the foundation of Clonfert, the genealogical placement among the Ciarraige — from the looser traditions of the Vita, and it treats the genuine coastal voyages (to Iona and the Hebrides, to Wales, to Brittany), which are wholly plausible within sixth-century Irish monastic seafaring, as a distinct matter from the seven-year Atlantic voyage of the legend. The America claim and the Navigatio itself are reserved for Sections 03–05; here the concern is the historical man.
