Section 04: The Rule

The firmest ground in the whole subject: the Rule of St Benedict (Regula Benedicti), the Prologue and seventy-three chapters of monastic legislation Benedict composed at Monte Cassino — a text whose words are his own, which can be quoted and analyzed directly, and which shaped the monastic civilization of the West. The two files cover, first (the flagship), the Rule itself — its structure, its Prologue, and the great source-critical question of its dependence on the anonymous Rule of the Master (the priority debate settled in de Vogüé’s favor) and on Cassian, Basil, and the desert tradition — and, second, the heart of its spirituality: the three commitments of stability, obedience, and conversion of life, the rhythm of ora et labora, and the discretio (moderation) that is the Rule’s genius.

Contents

File Topic
The Regula Benedicti The flagship file. The Rule as a text and a document; its structure (Prologue + 73 chapters); the Prologue (“Listen, O my son…”); the sources — the Rule of the Master (the priority debate), Cassian, Basil, Augustine, the Lives of the Fathers; RB 73 on the Rule as “a little rule for beginners”; the textual transmission and the autograph at Monte Cassino
Stability, Obedience, Conversion The Benedictine profession: stability (stabilitas), obedience (oboedientia), and conversion of life (conversatio morum) (RB 58); ora et labora as the shape of the day; discretio — moderation, “the mother of virtues” — as the distinctive genius of the Rule against the heroic excess of the desert

How to Use

  • Read The Regula Benedicti for the Rule as a whole and for the central source-critical problem of Benedictine studies: that the Rule is not wholly original but draws heavily on the Rule of the Master and the earlier monastic literature — a fact that, rightly understood, is the key to reading it.
  • Read Stability, Obedience, Conversion for the inner logic of the life the Rule prescribes — the vows, the balance of prayer and work, and the moderation that made the Rule livable where the desert’s heroics were not.
  • The daily and institutional working-out of the Rule is treated in Section 05.
