04 — Hagiography vs. History
The source-critical heart of the collection. Because Basil left nothing in writing, because his famous anecdotes reach print late, and because even his death year is given variously across the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century sources, this section asks what can honestly be known of him — and how this compendium writes about a thinly documented holy fool. It is the companion to the repository’s Xenia flagship.
Tradition: Russian Orthodox (glorified 1588; feast 2 August O.S. / 15 August N.S.)
Basil is a thinly documented saint, though not the repository’s limit case: unlike St. Xenia, he is anchored at two near-contemporary points — the Book of Degrees of about 1563 and the contemporary embassy account of Giles Fletcher (1591). This section separates what those anchors bear (the existence of the fool, his persona, the fact of a rebuke of the tsar, the 1588 glorification) from what only the late Life asserts (the specific scenes, the dates, the miracles). The methodology file builds the full argument — the dated source inventory, the attestation classes, the theology of glorifying such a saint, and the compendium’s rules. The second file draws out the sober residue that remains standing.
Section Contents
- Methodology — the flagship: the dated source inventory for a sixteenth-century holy fool; the disputed death date as a worked example; the attestation framework; what the Church claims in glorifying him; and the rules this compendium follows
- What Can Be Known — the sober residue: what survives the source criticism, and what does not
