09 — Historical Questions
An honest inventory of what can and cannot be known about Barnabas, and a survey of his reception and legacy. These files gather the contested questions handled across the collection — the authorship of the Epistle, the historicity of the martyrdom and the tomb-finding, the foundation-narrative of Cypriot autocephaly, the relation of Barnabas to Paul in the sources — and weigh them as a body; and they trace the apostle’s legacy from the early Church through the Church of Cyprus to modern scholarship.
Tradition: Pan-Orthodox (Apostle)
This section is where the collection states plainly what kind of evidence stands behind each part of the Barnabas tradition. The historical Barnabas of Acts and the Pauline letters is firmly attested and richly characterized; the Epistle, the martyrdom, the tomb, and the autocephaly charter rest on later and weaker foundations of differing kinds — an early but pseudonymous text, a fifth-century apocryphon, a Byzantine relic-tradition, a conciliar canon. These files do not flatten those differences but lay them out, naming for each claim its source, its date, and the scholarly assessment. The reception file then follows Barnabas through the tradition: his fortunes as a Pauline figure, the long afterlife of the Epistle, his role as the saint who makes Cyprus apostolic, and his standing in Orthodox and scholarly memory.

| The Historical Questions | The full inventory: what is securely known (Acts, Paul) versus what is later tradition; the authorship of the Epistle; the historicity of the martyrdom and the relic-finding; the autocephaly charter; the relation of Acts and Galatians on Barnabas; and the honest limits of the evidence. |
| Reception and Legacy | Barnabas through the centuries: his place in early Christian memory and the long reception of the Epistle; his function as the apostolic founder of Cyprus; his veneration East and West; the modern scholarship (Paget, Prostmeier, Hackett, Acts commentators); and what endures of the “son of encouragement.” |
