Section 01 — Foundations
The world into which Antony was born and the call that made him a monk: Coptic Egypt around 251, the Gospel sentence heard in church that sent him to sell his possessions, and the staged geography of withdrawal — from the edge of his village, to the tombs, to the deserted fort at Pispir, and finally to the inner mountain by the Red Sea — through which the Life of Antony charts the making of an anchorite.

| egypt-and-the-call.md | Coptic Egypt c. 251, the Christian household at Coma, and the conversion: “if you would be perfect, sell what you have” (Mt 19:21) heard at the Liturgy, the renunciation of land and care of his sister. |
| the-stages-of-withdrawal.md | The geography of anachoresis: the village ascetic under an old hermit, the move to the tombs, the twenty years in the deserted fort at Pispir, and the final withdrawal to the inner mountain — the spatial pattern of ever-deeper solitude. |
How These Files Connect
The call (egypt-and-the-call.md) sets the renunciation in its Egyptian Christian setting; the stages (the-stages-of-withdrawal.md) trace the spatial logic by which that renunciation deepened into the full anchoritic life. Together they supply the biographical spine that Sections 02–04 develop — the Life‘s account of how a Coptic farmer’s son became “Antony the Great.”
