07 — Andrew and the Image

Andrew’s place on the very eve of the iconoclast crisis: he died around 740, a generation before the Council of Hieria (754) and the great iconodule fathers, yet his hymns and homilies already breathe a settled veneration of the holy images and the Mother of God they depict. This section reads his work for its witness to the pre-iconoclast consensus and sets him among the last great figures before the storm.

This section places Andrew chronologically and theologically just before iconoclasm, drawing out the implicit theology of the image in his thought and treating him as a witness to what the Church believed before the controversy forced the question.
