06 — Andrew and the Monothelite Episode

The hardest chapter of the life, reported here from the sources and not glossed: in 712, under the usurper Philippikos Bardanes, Andrew subscribed to a synod at Constantinople that repudiated the Sixth Ecumenical Council and reinstated Monothelitism — and then, when Philippikos fell the next year, returned to Orthodoxy. This section presents the episode honestly, names the disputed question of his motive, and considers his rehabilitation.

This is the collection’s flagged section. It does for Andrew’s biography what METHODOLOGY §4 requires for sensitive topics: it states the attested fact, names the positions on the contested question of motive (duress versus conviction), and reports the return to Orthodoxy — without sensationalism and without suppression.
