03 — The Theology of Repentance

The spiritual logic beneath the Great Canon: the method by which the soul is made to address itself in the second person, summoned to compunction (penthos) by being set beside the figures of Old and New Testament — the fallen and the restored alike — so that Scripture becomes a mirror in which the conscience reads its own face. This section draws out the theology the Canon performs.

This section explains how the Great Canon works on the one who prays it: the self-accusing address, the typological mirror, and the gift of tears that Orthodox ascetic theology calls penthos.
