08 — Veneration

How Andrew is commemorated and depicted: his own liturgical commemoration — overshadowed almost everywhere by the feast his vision gave rise to — and his presence in the icon and hymnography of the Protection, where he stands at the margin pointing up at the Virgin’s outspread veil.

Tradition: Byzantine (Constantinopolitan); the Pokrov Russian Orthodox

For most of the Orthodox world, the veneration of Andrew is the keeping of the Pokrov; his personal cult is small and the feast is vast. These files treat the commemoration and the iconography, keeping the collection’s care about the instability of his personal dates (see What Can Be Known).
