03 — Foolishness for Christ
The ascetic vocation Andrew embodies: salos, holy folly, the deliberate feigning of madness for Christ’s sake. This section sets Andrew within the Byzantine tradition of the holy fool and then describes the persona the Life builds — feigned madness, night prayer, the life of the streets.
Tradition: Byzantine (Constantinopolitan)
Andrew’s Life is one of the two great classics of Byzantine holy folly, alongside the Life of Symeon of Emesa; through its Slavic reception it helped shape the whole later Russian tradition of the yurodivy (see St. Basil of Moscow, St. Xenia of Petersburg).
