Section 08: Glorification

The section of the St. Ambrose of Optina reference guide covering his canonization in June 1988 — the only Optina elder glorified in the first Millennium-Council batch of nine — the later glorification of the rest of the Optina synaxis, the 1998 uncovering of the elders’ relics, and the present life of the restored monastery. Together the two files trace Ambrose’s cult from the 1988 council to the working monastery and pilgrimage center of 2026, with the eldership question of the present handled in deliberate consistency with the repository’s verified treatment of spiritual direction.

Tradition: Russian Orthodox (canonized 1988)

File Topic
The Canonization of 1988 The Millennium Council’s nine saints and why Ambrose alone of the Optina elders was glorified first; the later synaxis — ROCOR 1990, the local Optina glorification of 1996, the general glorification of 2000 — and the Oct 11/24 feast of the fourteen; the 1998 uncovering of the relics of seven elders and the Vvedensky cathedral shrine; the revival frame: Optina returned 1987, and the 1993 Pascha martyrs
Optina Today The restored monastery: the skete, the revived publishing house, the scale of pilgrimage; the eldership question now — whether and how starchestvo continues, with the tradition’s own cautions against “elder-seeking” kept in line with the repository’s verified treatment; and the revival of Shamordino

How to Use

  • Read The Canonization of 1988 for the glorification sequence, the relics, and the way the canonizations sit within Optina’s own resurrection.
  • Read Optina Today for the monastery’s present state and for the sober, tradition-grounded handling of whether the eldership continues.
  • The repo-consistent anchors here — Ambrose among the nine canonized in 1988, Optina returned 1987, the not-yet-glorified 1993 martyrs — are those held in common with the repository’s Russian Monasticism.
