Section 04 — The Return

How rejection became reception: St. Alexis Toth’s turn from the Roman communion toward the Orthodox Church of his ancestors, his contact with Bishop Vladimir (Sokolovsky) of the Russian mission, and the formal reception of himself and his Minneapolis parish into the Orthodox Church on 25 March 1891 — the act that seeded a movement.

Tradition: Carpatho-Rusyn / American Orthodox

The first file follows Toth’s deliberation over the year after the Ireland confrontation: the recognition that the Unia had left his people defenseless, the discovery that a Russian Orthodox bishop was within reach, and the contact with Bishop Vladimir that opened the door. The second file treats the reception itself — 25 March 1891, Toth and some 361 parishioners of St. Mary’s — its date and sequence, the later ratification by the Russian Synod, and why this single parish’s return became the origin-point of a church-wide phenomenon. From within the Church the event is confessed as a return to the mother Church; the file also reports, without polemic, the Greek Catholic reading of it as a loss and a defection (METHODOLOGY §4.1, §4.2).
