Section 02 — The Making of a Priest

St. Alexis Toth’s formation in the Greek Catholic world of the Prešov region: a son of the hereditary clerical caste, educated in Latin and Greek Catholic seminaries and at university; married, ordained, and then widowed young; a professor and diocesan chancellor before he ever crossed the Atlantic. This section pins the biography — including the points where the sources genuinely disagree.

Tradition: Carpatho-Rusyn / American Orthodox

The two files here cover the pre-American life. The first treats birth, family, and education — and flags the real disputes: the birth year (1853 vs. 1854), the county of his birthplace, and the exact shape of his schooling. The second treats his marriage to Rosalie Mihalich, the early death of his wife and only child, and the offices he held at Prešov — seminary professor, secretary to the bishop, chancellor of the eparchy — the standing he gave up when he emigrated in 1889. Throughout, the discipline is that of the repository: where the hagiographic and the scholarly sources diverge, both are reported and neither collapsed (METHODOLOGY §3, §3.5).
