03 — The Monastery of the Holy Trinity
How the hermit of the Svir became, against his own will, the founder and abbot of a monastery: the disciples who gathered to his solitude and drew him into the reluctant founding of the Holy Trinity Monastery, and his ordination to the priesthood and acceptance of the abbacy under obedience. The account rests on Irodion’s near-contemporary Life (c. 1545).
Tradition: Russian Orthodox
This section covers the transformation of Alexander’s hermitage into a community. The pattern is the familiar one of the Russian North: a hermit seeks solitude; disciples find him and refuse to leave; a monastery grows around the reluctant elder, who takes on the burden of leadership only under obedience and out of love for those who have come. Alexander lived this pattern in full — he is portrayed throughout the Life as fleeing honor and clinging to humility, accepting the priesthood and the abbacy not from ambition but from a monk’s obedience to the will of God expressed through his brethren and his bishop.
The two files below treat, first, the gathering of the disciples and the founding of the Holy Trinity Monastery, and, second, Alexander’s ordination and his acceptance of the abbacy against his own desire. The monastery so founded is the one that, after the vision of 1508, would build its church in the name of the Holy Trinity (see Section 04).
