02 — Valaam and the Wilderness
The monk Alexander’s formation at the Valaam Monastery on Lake Ladoga and his passage from cenobitic obedience into eremitic solitude: the ascetic labors of his years on the island, and — with his abbot’s blessing — his withdrawal around 1485 into the trackless forest by the Svir river, where he lived for years as a hermit before any brethren gathered to him. The account rests on Irodion’s near-contemporary Life (c. 1545).
Tradition: Russian Orthodox
This section covers the long middle of St. Alexander’s hidden life: the years in which the young Vepsian monk was formed at Valaam in the common life and the ascetic struggle, and the decisive step by which he left even that austere monastery for total solitude in the wilderness of the Svir. This double movement — first into the monastery, then out of it into the desert — is the classic shape of the eremitic vocation in the Christian East, from the desert fathers of Egypt through the hermits of the Russian North; Alexander lived it in the forests between Lakes Ladoga and Onega.
The two files below treat, first, the years of formation and ascetic labor at Valaam, and, second, the blessing to depart and the years alone in the Svir wilderness — the solitude out of which, in 1508, the vision of the Holy Trinity would come (see Section 04).
