01 — Foundations

The origins of St. Alexander of Svir: the child Amos, born in 1448 to Vepsian peasant parents at Mandera on the river Oyat in the far north of the Novgorod land; his youthful longing for the monastic life; and his secret flight to the Valaam Monastery on Lake Ladoga, where he was tonsured with the name Alexander. Everything in this section descends from the Life written by his disciple Irodion (c. 1545) and is reported as that Life attests it.

Tradition: Russian Orthodox

This section establishes who St. Alexander was before he became the founder of the Holy Trinity Monastery: a boy of the Finnic, forest-dwelling Vepsian people of the Russian North, born far from the centers of church and power, who from youth was drawn to the monastic life against the wishes of his parents, and who at last slipped away to Valaam — the great island monastery of Lake Ladoga — to be made a monk. The two files below follow, first, his birth and childhood as Amos, and, second, the flight to Valaam and the tonsure that gave him the name by which the Church knows him.

Because the sole substantial source is Irodion’s near-contemporary Life, the section is careful to say so: the dates and details are those the Life gives, and they are reported here as hagiographic testimony pinned to their source, not as independently documented biography (per METHODOLOGY §3.5).
