08 — Orthodox Veneration

Alban as a saint of the one undivided Church: the pre-Schism principle by which Orthodoxy venerates the Western saints of the first millennium; the twentieth-century recovery led by St. John Maximovitch and ROCOR; the 9 March 2017 decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, whose list of added Western saints names Alban explicitly; and Orthodox Britain — the Fellowship of St Alban and St Sergius (founded after a 1927 conference held at St Albans itself), the convert movements, and the feast of 22 June, with the calendar variance (the Book of Common Prayer’s 17 June) explained.

Tradition: Western (pre-Schism, Roman Britain)

Alban died at least seven centuries before the estrangement of East and West; the Church that venerated him in 429 was the one Church of the ecumenical councils. His Orthodox veneration is therefore not adoption but inheritance — the same logic this repository traces for Patrick, Genevieve, Columba, and Cuthbert. The first file sets out that theology and the formal acts (John Maximovitch’s decree, the 2017 Moscow Synod). The second treats the lived veneration in Britain — where the very name of the Orthodox–Anglican Fellowship of St Alban and St Sergius yokes Britain’s protomartyr to Radonezh — and the feast, with its dating tangle sorted.
