The Toll-Houses Controversy
The intra-Orthodox flagship of this collection: the teaching of the aerial toll-houses (telonia / mytarstva), by which the soul after death is said to pass through a series of demonic “customs stations,” each accusing it of a category of sin. This section maps the teaching and its sources — weighing the genre of the key text, the Theodora narrative — and the fierce twentieth-century dispute over how literally it is to be taken. Per METHODOLOGY §4.2 it names every position with citations and adjudicates none.
Tradition: Russian Orthodox / ROCOR (where the teaching is most strongly defended); debated across Orthodoxy
The toll-houses are the clearest case in Orthodox eschatology of a teaching that is neither dogma nor error but a theologoumenon — a theological opinion with real support in hagiographic and liturgical tradition, never defined by an Ecumenical Council, and held in different ways by Orthodox Christians in good standing on every side. This section is written to the discipline the repository methodology names as its model: the toll-houses treatment in seraphim-rose/04-soul-after-death/aerial-realm.md (METHODOLOGY §4.2). It distinguishes dogma from theologoumenon explicitly, weighs the genre and authenticity of each source honestly, names the proponents of each reading, and leaves the question where the Church has left it — open.
