The Treasures of Athos
The Holy Mountain is the greatest single repository of the material heritage of Orthodox Christianity: relics, wonderworking icons, manuscripts, and works of art accumulated over a thousand years and, uniquely, never dispersed. The first file treats the great relics and the wonderworking icons — the Portaitissa, the Axion Estin, the Tricherousa — reported with attestation-pinning, as the tradition attests them. The second treats the manuscript libraries, the greatest surviving collection of Byzantine books, and the frescoes of the Macedonian and Cretan schools.
Tradition: Pan-Orthodox (Athonite)
This section treats the Mountain’s material and artistic heritage. The first file, relics-and-wonderworking-icons.md, describes the great relics and the wonderworking icons of the Theotokos, with the accounts of the icons pinned to their attestation (§3.5). The second file, the-libraries-and-the-art.md, treats the manuscript libraries and the frescoes and painting of the Macedonian and Cretan schools, linking the icons hub.
