The Saints of Athos
Over a thousand years the Holy Mountain has produced a great host of saints — founders, hesychasts, theologians, neomartyrs, and elders — commemorated together in the Synaxis of All Saints of Athos. The first file surveys that host across the centuries, deferring those who have their own collections and covering the lesser-known briefly. The second treats the living heart of Athonite sanctity: the tradition of eldership (the gerontas or spiritual father) through which the Mountain’s holiness is transmitted from generation to generation.
Tradition: Pan-Orthodox (Athonite)
This section treats the Mountain’s saints and its tradition of sanctity. The first file, the-athonite-synaxis.md, surveys the Synaxis of All Saints of Athos and the great Athonite saints across the centuries, deferring those with collections via links and covering minor figures briefly. The second file, the-athonite-spiritual-fathers.md, treats the tradition of eldership on the Mountain, deferring St. Paisios, St. Sophrony, St. Nikodemos, and St. Cosmas of Aetolia to their collections and to the Philokalia.
