The Holy Mountain

The Mountain itself, before its history and institutions: the peninsula and its geography, the tradition that the Theotokos is its patron and abbess so that the whole Mountain is “the Garden of the Theotokos,” and the avaton — the exclusion of women — that follows from that dedication and is today contested on human-rights grounds. This section sets the frame within which everything else is read.

Tradition: Pan-Orthodox (Athonite)

This section treats what Athos is as a place and a dedication. The first file, the-garden-of-the-theotokos.md, describes the peninsula — the easternmost promontory of Chalkidiki, crowned by the 2,033-metre peak — and the tradition, pinned to its sources, that the Mother of God received the Mountain as her portion and is honoured as its abbess. The second file, the-avaton-and-the-monastic-republic-in-brief.md, sets out the avaton — the rule excluding women and female animals — its content, its traditional rationale, and the modern EU and human-rights debate it has provoked, presented from both sides (§4).
