09 — The Calendar in Practice

Who keeps which calendar as of August 2026, and what to actually do about it: how to convert Old Style to New Style, which calendar an individual should keep, whether one may commune at a parish on the other calendar, how to handle two Christmases and a fast that runs through the Western holiday season — and what a convert should and should not be taught.

Tradition: Pan-Orthodox (the second file is written from the Russian Orthodox / ROCOR standpoint)

The Standpoint of the Second File

The pastoral counsel is given from within a Julian-calendar jurisdiction and is labelled accordingly, because a reader is entitled to know whose practice he is reading. The counsel itself, however, is not partisan: it directs a member of a New Calendar parish to keep his parish’s calendar, directs anyone to commune wherever he finds a canonical altar, and lists four claims common in old-calendar literature that should not be taught to converts because they are not true.

What This Section Refuses to Do

It does not turn the calendar into a test. The whole collection has argued that it is not one, and the guidance is written so that a reader who follows it will neither hide his practice nor use it to measure anyone else.
