02 — The Cycles
Orthodox liturgical time runs on four cycles at once: the day, the week, the fixed year of the Menaion, and the movable year of the Triodion and Pentecostarion. This section sets out how each works and — crucially for everything that follows — which of them are counted and which are dated. Only the dated cycles are touched by the calendar question at all.

The Load-Bearing Point
Two of the four cycles are counted: the day and the week run by sequence, not by date, and every calendar reform in history has renumbered days without reordering them. Sunday, the tone of the week, and the Wednesday and Friday fast are identical for every Orthodox Christian on earth.
Two are dated: the fixed cycle is read off a solar date grid, and the movable cycle is computed by the Paschalion and then expressed on whatever grid the local church uses. These are different reckonings, and they can be changed independently — which is the fact the whole calendar question turns on.
And one structure spans both: the Apostles’ Fast, with a movable start and a fixed end. Section 05 shows what happens to it when the two reckonings are separated.
